LED strip lights that actually last
The cheap ones die. Here is how to tell them apart.
Most LED strips look the same in the photo. A roll of warm light, a peel-off back, a little remote. Six months later half of them have a dead patch or a corner that has peeled off the wall. The difference is in three small things the listing rarely shows you.
The chips do the work
The light comes from tiny diodes set along the strip. More diodes per metre means smoother, brighter light with no dotty look. Cheap strips space them out to save money, so you see every individual point through a TV stand or behind a headboard. Look for a tight, even run of diodes. If the listing hides a close-up of the strip lit up, that is usually the reason.
The glue is what fails first
The strip itself often outlives the sticky back. Warm rooms, painted walls, and dusty skirting boards all loosen the adhesive over time. A good strip uses a stronger backing tape and gives you a little slack so you are not stretching it tight around a corner. When you fit one, wipe the surface clean and press it down slowly. That single minute is the difference between a year and a week.
Match the strip to the job
A strip behind a television is doing a calm job: a soft glow that takes the strain off your eyes in a dark room. A strip in a car is doing a different one: bright accent colour that survives heat and vibration. They are not the same product, and buying one for the other is how people end up disappointed. Pick for the spot you actually have in mind.
The two we keep
For the room, the Bias Lighting LED Strip for TVs sits behind the screen and gives you that even back-glow without the dotty look. It is the one job it does, and it does it well. For the car, the Car RGB Ambient LED Strip Lights run a colour wash along the footwells and trim, built for the heat and shake of a car rather than a cool living room wall.
If you want the car set as part of a wider night-drive kit, it also sits inside the Night Drive Kit, which we put together for exactly this.
